Composition:

POM (Polyoxymethylene) is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic made from formaldehyde. It is known for its excellent balance of properties, which makes it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.

Properties:

High Mechanical Strength: POM exhibits excellent tensile strength and rigidity, making it suitable for demanding mechanical applications.
Low Friction and Wear Resistance: It has low friction properties, which decrease wear and extend the service life of components like gears and bearings.
Chemical Resistance: POM is resistant to a wide range of solvents, oils, and fuels, though it is sensitive to strong acids and bases.
Good Stability: Maintains dimensional stability under varying temperatures and humidity levels, which is critical for precision parts.
Lightweight: Being a thermoplastic, POM is lightweight, making it a suitable choice where weight reduction is essential.

Types of POM:

Homopolymer POM: Known for its higher strength and stiffness, primarily used in high-load applications.
Copolymer POM: Offers better impact resistance and lower susceptibility to stress cracking, making it suitable for more complex applications.

Industrial Applications:

Automotive: Used in parts such as fuel systems, electrical connectors, and gears due to its durability and chemical resistance.
Consumer Goods: Found in products like kitchen utensils, handles, and appliances owing to its toughness and aesthetic appeal.
Electronics: Utilized in components like housings, switches, and connectors thanks to its insulating properties and stability.
Industrial Machinery: Used in components such as bearings, bushings, and gears, where low friction and wear resistance are critical.
Medical Devices: Used in non-sterile applications, such as instrument casings and components due to its excellent mechanical properties.

Considerations:

Temperature Limitations: POM has a melting point between 175-185°C (347-365°F) and may not be suitable for high-temperature applications.
Moisture Absorption: While it has low moisture absorption compared to other plastics, exposure to high humidity can affect its dimensions slightly.
Processing Challenges: POM can be challenging to process due to its high melting point and potential for degradation if not processed correctly.
